Tether Free photoTether Free

Tether Free is an application written to let you use the Internet on your iPhone for free. It uses the same access point for tethered access as your iPhone uses for normal data so as far as I can tell no additional charges *should* be incurred.

The download includes Carrier files for both ATT in the US as well as O2 in the UK – more will be added in the next few days.

I say *should* as I haven’t been able to see my latest bill yet as this application was only published very recently, however I’m 99% sure it’ll be fine. Use with caution though, and at your own risk.

Hi, does this program only work on a mac?
Can’t figure out how to use it. Thanks

Ger added this comment on Jun 18 09 at 9:33 am

Yep, sorry, it’s Mac OS X only

I’ve not tried it yet but I will as soon as I get the hack for 3.0 and/or my new 3GS. I’ve been costing up O2 and Vodafone in the UK, I’m on Vodafone (hence the need for the hack) and their internet and roaming is a *fraction* of the price of O2. In fact as both O2 and Vodafone seem to have good 7.2 HSDPA coverage in London you can use up your entire month’s usage on O2 in minutes at full speed leaving you with a HUGE phone bill. Vodafone gives me 20GB (fare usage) for just £20/month which is far more reasonable.

My Point? Well it may just be cheaper for you to hack your phones and use a Vodafone contract or even a second SIM than pay O2’s crazy data prices.

will this work in Norway (netcom)?

You do not need software to use tethering, just a single update to your ATT_US.ipcc file and that’s it. http://mrnasty.org/2009/06/iphone-3-0-release-setting-up-united-states-tethering/

How to set up Tether after you have installed Tether Free:
On Iphone: Go to Settings>>General>>Network>>Internet Tethering
Switch Tethering On
Connect iPhone to computer with USB
On a Mac
A pop-up stating “A new network interface has been detected.” appears
Click Network Preferences
Configure settings to iPhone
On a PC
Use Network Control Panel to select and configure the iPhone connection
Connect iPhone to computer via Bluetooth
On Iphone Turn on Bluetooth (Settings>>General>>Bluetooth)
When connected A blue band with “Internet Tethering” will appear at top of iphone screen.

Well, good news and bad news. The good news is that this program worked perfectly and I have already tried the tethering and it works like a charm. The BAD news is that somehow this screwed up AT&T’s services. My voicemail’s are no longer being delivered. When I go to SETTINGS->GENERAL->NETWORK->CELLULAR DATA NETWORK … all of the settings no read wap.cingular!!!! What’s up??? Anyone know what this means and how I can get my voicemail’s back?

Seems like there’s some stuff I need to look into, don’t worry, won’t be hard to fix :) got other commitments as well unfortunately!

A workaround to get MMS and Visualv Voicemail working again after activating tethering:
http://www.krillr.com/blog/3DPQHBZ3/i-have-tethering-and-mms-on-my-iphone-and-yes-im-on-att

Unfortunately, haven’t been able to figure out how to do it without a second GSM phone on hand for a few minutes.

Michael added this comment on Jun 19 09 at 2:40 am

The above looks a bit long-winded, pretty sure it’s much easier than that!

Lawrence Dudley added this comment on Jun 19 09 at 12:28 pm

To get Visual Voicemail back Under network setting change your visual voicemail APN from wap.cingular to settings to acds.voicemail. Bingo thats it!

Bob added this comment on Jun 19 09 at 3:43 pm

Cheers for the feedback Bob! O2 users should be OK – mine works fine anyway :-)

Lawrence Dudley added this comment on Jun 19 09 at 5:57 pm

now the tethering option has gone missing from my network settings!? are o2 on to us?

jimmy added this comment on Jun 22 09 at 1:20 pm

Does it work with a iphone 3G 16GB in Germany and is it possible to enter the Telecom data on my own?

McLeaoud added this comment on Jun 24 09 at 8:23 pm

Thanks so much for this – works perfectly. The only thing that went wrong is that the file erased my phone’s MMS settings – but, Google helped there and now everything is working beautifully, including tethering. Thanks again.

Andrew added this comment on Jun 24 09 at 9:49 pm

I tested the files for T-Mobile Germany but none of them works. So german users have to wait for the first breaktrough . Maybe when the t-Mobile US carrier will be hacked.

Thx for the great app.

PS: DMG files only works on Mac OS. Every topic the same question!

Thanks! Works like a charm!

Had some minor problems getting an IP address at first but that problem was resolved once pdaNet was disabled/removed.

So far no problems with Visual Voicemail.

I got tethering to work. Thank you!

Then I lost visual voicemail, so I changed the APN setting as you recommended. I got visual voicemail back, but then lost tethering.

So I went through the process again to get tethering, but the APN setting went back to wap.cingular, which indicates to me that visual voicemail is gone again. Is there something in the ipcc file that makes tethering not compatible with VVM?

Michael added this comment on Sep 22 09 at 6:02 am

Great app but it has now gone missing! Tethering has just disappeared this morning while trying to connect to my mac. Tried re-installing but still no joy. I am running 3.1 software. Checked and it’s not just my ‘phone that it has gone from. Any ideas?
