An application I wrote to disable the annoying iTunes Store Links (or arrows) in iTunes 8.

My Tunes photo

Note to PPC users: My Tunes is currently only INTEL compatible.

Update: I’ve been told that iTunes 8 also comes with a Genre Browser that you can’t disable – while I haven’t had that problem I have updated My Tunes to include this fix as well.

On a completely unrelated note to my photography work I’ve decided to give a little something back to the tech community.

Apple released iTunes 8 today and with it they removed the option to disable the annoying little arrows that take you to the iTunes store.

I’ve always hated them so I looked for a way of disabling them that wasn’t in the iTunes preference panel.

I’ve packaged the script needed to disable the annoying arrows or Links to iTunes Store as Apple calls them into an app which you can download below so you don’t have to dig around in Terminal (the white text, black background stuff) :-)

Download iTunes Link Remover Version 1.0

Downloaded a total of 2381 times

Big note by the way: Only works on Macs – PCs, well, I guess there’s a setting in the Registry or something. I don’t own a PC so someone else will have to step in there.

You know what would make this perfect? Adding the ability to remove the genre browser too…

“defaults write com.apple.itunes show-genre-when-browsing -bool FALSE”

I have updated My Tunes – it now removes the genre browser as well :-) Thanks for the hint Cem!

What about the “create file names with track number”? I hate the 01, 02 ect in my filenames. iTunes now adds them to any imported file and/or converted selection. What a pain.

I’ll look into it – give me a few hours :-)

It’s not working for me, and I wish it would! PPC OS 10.4.11. I raniTunes Link Removerwith iTunes off. After I started iTunes, I click a song and the arrows appear.
Thanks.

Dortmunder – can you try and run it with iTunes open? I haven’t tested on PPC at all so this might be an issue although it really shouldn’t be.

I have sent you a file to try and run instead, if this appears to be a widespread problem I will make it publically available.

Can someone with a PPC mac get in touch with me please so I can compile another version? It’s an Automator-based application so I can’t cross-compile from XCode.

My email address is iam@lawrencedudley.co.uk or catch me on msn at lawrencedudley@gmail.com

Thank you! I have had enough Terminal trouble (all due to my own poor typing) to prefer to stay out of it when I can. You may have prevented total meltdown.

No worries :-) I’ve gotten a lot of hints, tips and help out of the tech community and it’s a good feeling to be able to give something back.

If you have any problems with this app at all I want to hear from you and fix it :-)

Can this be undone once ran?

Greg added this comment on Sep 15 08 at 2:33 am

Yeah but you’d have to use Terminal to undo it. Give me a shout if you have any problems :-)
